Dec 30, Maria rated it liked it. Was ok- seemed like every story was about an idiotic woman being an idiot. Jul 28, Anna Richey rated it it was amazing Shelves: I read this when I was in my early 20s more than ten years ago and still think about it.

I enjoyed it a lot. Mar 03, Brooke Hayes rated it liked it. An interesting glimpse into how different cultures can layer on top of each other. Some of the characters are a bit monochromatic. May 02, Amy rated it it was ok Shelves: I picked this book up strictly because of the back cover not pictured, but it's so colorfully Indian and I really liked it.
Moynihan's stories portray a vastly different India from the one I know, which in itself is a vastly different one than the one which exists today, since I was last there in I really liked one of the stories, moderately liked one, and merely tolerated the rest -- the writing itself was decent, but I'm not a short story fan, and as I said, I was visiting a place that I picked this book up strictly because of the back cover not pictured, but it's so colorfully Indian and I really liked it.
I really liked one of the stories, moderately liked one, and merely tolerated the rest -- the writing itself was decent, but I'm not a short story fan, and as I said, I was visiting a place that was so different from what I recall that I was uncomfortable. Aug 20, Denise Tarasuk rated it it was amazing. Yoga Hotel promises the reader that they will not be bored! This delightful book contains stories that I shall not forget. The stories leave me with thoughts of Indian culture, mixed so deeply with the visitor that come to this diverse land searching for something, that they may indeed be true.
They are to me anyway.
Such a rich and totally absorbing gem all wrapped up in one book! Jan 09, Marilyn rated it liked it Shelves: Masterji painted a bit too many ugly American characters, but perhaps it's fair. Dec 04, Cathy rated it did not like it.
Jan 24, Allen added it. I can't say I recommend the book. To my taste, it was boring and conventional.

Two dinners join us for dinner at one of our favorite restaurants or explore any of the nearby beach communities on your own. However, we supply cold drinking water, coffee, tea and coconuts free of charge. A short list of things we do: There is no air condition in the rooms. We support the local economy by hiring staff and buying food from the area. We separate plastic, paper, organic, glass, etc.
We reuse what we can. Not just surfing, not just yoga.
But time moved differently in Tallala and my awareness refused to find the present, instead, it danced into the imagined future I felt us stretching and striving toward, reaching for the stillness of having it all. Which was, to me, a fantasy and the opposite of what we were there for. The trip had turned from a way to advance my yoga practice — improving my strength, flexibility and ability to be present — into a frenzied quest to become my best self as soon as possible. But each day I felt further away from uncovering the enlightened part of me Mary-Kate had said existed in each of us.
The chatter at dinner flitted from yoga wear to food intolerances and eventually relaxed into radical plans of self-improvement.

Ally was going to launch a platform for yoga teachers and the Park Rangers wanted to open a yoga school in Darwin where the classes would be held on stand-up paddleboards. She told the couple that she had taken a leap and left her high-flying job in media for a life of financial insecurity as she hopped from one yoga retreat to the next — Ibiza, Bali, Sri Lanka. I wanted to ask how big the leap really was when you already owned property in Bondi. I wanted to ask whether the billions of people around the world who work to simply eat were lacking in creativity or bravery.
I wanted to ask why the yoga was on a paddleboard.

I knew that the stripped-bare, back-to-basics, off-the-grid, down to-earth, minimalist approach was expensive and the morality attached to how you spend your dollar only left me smug and virtuous when I could afford it.
